Going on a date used to be easy - a trip to the cinema, a tub of popcorn and some awkward teenage flirting was about all that was involved. But what do you do if you're faced with the prospect of going on a first date now? People of all ages are increasingly using dating websites to find their perfect partner and this will inevitably involve a date or two at some point. We've put together some top dating tips to help you navigate the world of online dating.

Be open minded. We'd all like a tall George Clooney lookalike with an infectious personality and a holiday home in the Bahamas but, unfortunately, most of us aren't going to get it. Rejecting anyone who doesn't fulfil all your criteria is only going to limit your chances of finding someone, so give them a little slack

Chat. One good thing about dating websites, email and text is that you can chat with people really easily. Talk as much as you can before meeting up to get an idea of what they're like - it'll save you wasting time with people who just don't suit and also reduce the awkwardness of that first date

Play it cool. A casual drink for the first couple of dates is perfectly fine. Even if you get along really well, don't get carried away - you've got plenty of time to get to know each other

Be safe. It should go without saying but we'll say it anyway, just to make sure - always meet people you don't know in public places and tell your friends and family where you're going. Never give out personal information, such as where you live and work, to people you don't know, even if they seem nice online or after the first meeting

Relax and have fun. The chances are that everyone else is nervous about getting back into dating as well. The best advice is not to take it too seriously and just see it as an opportunity to meet some new people and have a laugh. As the old saying goes, good things often come along when you least expect it.
