Focus on... Edinburgh Festival

PA - Edinburgh Castle
Visit Edinburgh Castle

The 2012 Edinburgh Festival runs from 9 August - 2 September and, as ever, there’s a packed programme on activity with the largest programme staged to date.

Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.

Despite worries that competition from the Olympics and the global financial downturn could affect productions, organisers believe ticket sales could set a new record.

If you’re heading to Edinburgh for the festival but would like to see more of the city, then might we suggest you visit the city’s castle; not only is it interesting to visit but there’s also plenty to see as you make your way there, including Princes Street and the some great views of the Princes Street Gardens and the castle itself.

As you wander up to the castle, take some time to appreciate St Giles Cathedral and, even in non-festival time, there’s a chance there will be a few street performers entertaining on the Royal Mile.

If you’re still hungry for culture, head for the National Museum of Scotland and way to the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Exploring Edinburgh at festival time is likely to mean longer queues and an added hustle and bustle, but if you’re seeking a busy city break, it’s the perfect time to visit.
