I consider myself very fortunate that I no longer have toendure the morning and teatime rush hour traffic. The stress associated withconstantly riding the clutch, hitting the break, shouting at others is immense.I'm sure most of us have experienced that moment when we have to count to ten,or possibly twenty in fear of losing our temper. I am pretty good behind thewheel, or like to think I am. There was, however one of those frustratingmoments last night on my journey home that left me wondering what's wrong withsome folks when they get behind the wheel? It was that overtaking issue; I'msure you're familiar with the situation. The guy was driving at a nominal speedbut the clear road ahead of him was proving too appealing to me, especiallywith growing hunger pangs. So at a speed, well below the limit of the road onwhich we were travelling I attempted to overtake. Almost immediately my fellowmotorist was incensed that I should consider leading the way and at the momentwe were parallel hit the accelerator.
Running out of safe passing space Idropped back and as soon as I gave my intention to play follow the leader mynemesis slowed down to a rather sedate pace. A few miles passed and my growingfrustration of driving at almost 20mph below the speed limit when knowing mywife had a rather delightful meal waiting for me was overwhelming. At the nextopportunity of clear road and extensive passing space I hit the acceleratorand again the chap driving the car ahead demonstrated his fear of actuallyfollowing me. Unfortunately for him I had torque, tenacity and open road inmy favour and I succeeded. Instantly the rather elderly gentleman seemed todiscover that his car was capable of greater speed than he had previouslydemonstrated. How sad that he then proceeded to chase me down a rather bendy'A' road until I disappeared off down our country lane a few miles later. Ifhis ego is that easily bruised I hope he received at least one Valentine's cardtoday or he's blood vessels with be at bursting point!
