Casey Kasem's American Top 40 - The 70s

Casey Kasem
Casey Kasem
On Smooth Radio 70s, we will be replaying original editions of the American Top 40 with Casey Kasem.

Every week, we will have a different week from a particular year. Sound good? We think so.

At the weekend, we will play the chart in full on Saturday mornings from 9am until midday and then replay it on Sunday nights from 9pm until midnight.

Every week, we'll update this page to let you know what year you'll be hearing songs from the following weekend

This week

This week, you will hear the American Top 40 from February 17th 1973. That was when Elton John did the Crocodile Rock, King Harvest was Dancing in the Moonlight and The O'Jays boarded the Love Train.

We'd love to hear what you were up to in 1979 and if you had a song from that year that bring back great memories. Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Some really class songs played this week on the AT40 and some excellent fillers. 'Aubrey' is one of my all time favourites and also really enjoyed hearing King Harvest, Blue Ridge Rangers, Dr Hook, Wings, Deodato, Joni Mitchell, Moody Blues, Gallery & Chuck Berry.

Incidentally the following week (24/2/73) was the first stereo broadcast.

A couple of other thoughts, I have listened to the AT40 remastered shows on many stations around the world on the internet over the past year or so. Bear in mind the main content of the show is the same on all stations broadcasting the shows each weekend. With regards playing back the shows, if you have the technology you can do it. I love playing back the shows again in my car.

I have listened to the AT40 shows from the 1970's and 1980's each weekend for well over a year, so it great to hear Smooth run the 1970 shows. All the shows from the 1980's were 4 hour shows, for instance this weekend it is February 1987 featured. The 1979 charts are also 4 hour shows, hence as there is only a 3 hour slot for the 1970's shows it usually starts around number 30,31 or 32.

You are fortunate to have the AT 40 shows running commercial-free in the UK, with having "filler songs" in its place.

I'm a Yank and where I live, in your former colonies (in listening to the AT 40 shows) we are subjected to radio commercials for cars, store sales, and personal hygiene products.

Another drawback with American broadcasters of AT 40 is that they play the show at unpopular hours. Where I live the show plays on Sunday mornings at 0700 Hours. I love that Smooth Radio plays it at times more convenient for me, which would be midday on Sundays, local time.

I found this website and audio stream for AT 40 since I missed the Feb 1971 show (overslept) on local radio. So I Googled some words and found Smooth Radio 70s.

Coincidentally, the same show dates plays in American radio as it does for Smooth Radio 70s. So the Feb 17 1973 will also play in American radio this weekend.

I am flattered that the Royal subjects of the UK look upon AT 40 so favorably since it is "American" Top 40".

After all, July 4th 1776 is considered by some as the day the American Colonies declared treason towards The Crown.

I agree with Mike the countdown started from number 30 instead of starting at number 40 and the fillers were ok butwould have sooner heard the entire top 40 instead

Great to hear the 1979 replay. Excellent choice of 'fillers' but why were the first ones in hour 1 and 2 preceeded with 1974 jingles even though they were 1979 records?

Incidentally this was the final AT40 show to be produced by Nikki Wine who died of Leukemia in the mid 1990's in her 40's.
