Paul McCartney to be given France's Legion of Honour; one of France's highest cultural awards.

The singer is to officially be made an officer of the Legion of Honour at a ceremony on September 8. McCartney's spokesperson has not yet announced whether the former Beatle will attend the gala event.

France's Legion of Honour award has previously been given to Lenny Kravitz, Downton Abbey's Shirley MacLaine and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The prestigious prize was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 for people who have contributed significantly to French society and culture.
