The Jubilee Woods Project

The Queen plants a tree in Jubilee Woods
2012 is set to be a landmark year for Great Britain, with the Olympics taking place in the summer and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years on the throne. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, the Woodland Trust have set up the Jubilee Woods project, aiming to plant millions of trees across the UK to mark this special year. The goal is to create hundreds of Jubilee Woods and 60 Diamond Woods by bringing together landowners, councils and communities to commit to planting new woodland.

The Woodland Trust provides guidance and support for anyone interested in getting involved in the Jubilee Woods Project and are highlighting the fact that in just ten years a barren field could transform into a thriving young woodland, with trees well over head height and an abundance of wildlife enjoying the habitat. Woodland can be used for farm productivity, fuel or simply to ensure there are these unique spaces for future generations to enjoy.

If you'd like to get involved in the Jubilee Woods Project and don't have 60 acres of land to spare for a whole wood (we know we don't!), you can sign up to the Pledge to Plant campaign on the Woodland Trust website. This means you commit to planting a tree to mark the Diamond Jubilee, whether it's in a Jubilee or Diamond Wood near you or just in your back garden. The website also has lots of information and advice on tree species, planting advice and how to get the most out of your community woodland.
