National Nest Box Week

Starting on the 14 February, Valentine's Day, National Nest Box Week aims to highlight the need for good nesting places for all types of birds, from Blue Tits to Barn Owls.

Natural nesting sites, such as holes in buildings or tress, are rapidly decreasing for our birds and it's important to provide them with suitable homes, in order to enhance the biodiversity of our living spaces and provide suitable nesting places for birds to breed.

As the name suggests, National Nest Box Week is all about encouraging people to put up nesting boxes in their garden or local area. Whether you buy a new one, refurbish an old one or make your own, a nest box will not only allow the birds in your area to breed safely, it will also give you the pleasure of being able to watch them and monitor their progress. You could even set up a camera on the box, to see how they prepared for their nesting - and of course catch a glimpse of the little ones once they've hatched! You could even install a little camera in the box and watch the whole cycle of life unfold, just like this:
To get involved in National Nest Box Week it really is as simple as putting a nest box up and keeping an eye on it, to see if any birds make it their home. The National Nest Box Week website also has lots of tips on everything from identifying the different birds in your area to making your own nest box from scratch.
